Giant Pacific Octopus
Enteroctopus dofleini
The Giant Pacific Octopus is a solitary yet highly intelligent animal.
This species grows bigger and lives longer than any other of its kin.
They have NINE brains! One doughnut-shaped, central brain and eight smaller ones located in each arm. This helps them control each limb separately.
They also have three hearts. One of these pumps blood across the body and the other two pump it past the gills in order to pick up oxygen. Their blood is blue due to the protein, haemocyanin, which contains copper, unlike our iron rich blood.
Currently their population numbers are unknown. They do not appear on any endangered lists but they are highly sensitive to environmental conditions. Higher pollution levels may be affecting these amazing creatures.
